Chelsea seem ready to stand by Antonio Conte for the moment, but that’s mainly because Luis Enrique turned down the job.

The Italian tactician’s position was on the brink after a series of poor results, culminating in last night’s 4-1 defeat to Watford.

It was reported Conte risked the sack, but sources close to the Stamford Bridge club state that owner Roman Abramovich has renewed his support for now.

However, Calciomercato.com suggest the only reason Conte is still in the job is that Luis Enrique turned down the chance to take over.

Conte has given his players three days off, stating they were “tired” and needed the rest.

If he does leave Chelsea before the 18 months of his contract are up, a return to Italy would be probable, with Milan and Roma showing an interest.

A second stint on the Italy bench is also a possibility.
