Poland referee Szymon Marciniak has been appointed for Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final second leg between Napoli and Milan at the Stadio Maradona.
Milan’s win in the first leg at San Siro this past Wednesday was overshadowed by controversial decisions from match official Istvan Kovacs. UEFA have therefore decided to assign Marciniak for the second leg.
Kovacs left both sides unhappy with a red card for Napoli midfielder Zambo Anguissa, a yellow card for Napoli defender Kim, who will be suspended in the second leg and a late Milan penalty appeal rejected.
Marciniak, on the other hand, is regarded as one of the most experienced match officials in Europe and is accustomed to refereeing Serie A clubs.
This season, the 42-year-old has overseen Milan’s 4-0 win over Dinamo Zagreb in October as well as Barcelona-Inter and Porto-Inter.
This past June, he was the referee in charge of England-Italy in the Nations League. Last season, he took charge of Liverpool-Milan, Manchester United-Atalanta, Inter-Liverpool and Juventus-Villarreal in the Champions League.
Marciniak was the referee of the World Cup Final between France and Argentina this past December.
