Inter out-played Liverpool for long periods at San Siro, but failed to take their chances and rattled the crossbar, beaten in the final minutes by a Roberto Firmino header and Mohamed Salah strike.

This was the first time the Nerazzurri were in a Champions League knockout fixture in 10 years, but Nicolò Barella was suspended for both legs, with Joaquin Correa and Robin Gosens injured. Jurgen Klopp surprised with 18-year-old Harvey Elliott getting his Champions League debut in midfield.

Lautaro Martinez curled wide after Denzel Dumfries won it back, while Sadio Mané nodded an Andy Robertson free kick inches over the bar.

Hakan Calhanoglu was very unlucky not to open the scoring after 15 minutes, as his shot from a tricky angle smashed against the crossbar and spun away.

An audacious Mané overhead kick hit the side-netting and Calhanoglu made a decisive interception to stop Salah volleying an Elliott cross.

At the other end, Ibrahima Konate did the same to stop Edin Dzeko meeting the Dumfries ball across the face of goal, while Milan Skriniar’s header on a corner went wide and Virgil Van Dijk used his pace to cut off Dzeko clear on goal.

Inter started the second half very aggressively, Lautaro Martinez at full stretch just unable to get on the end of a Perisic cross at the back post, then Dzeko’s goal ruled offside.

Liverpool were under increasing pressure with panicked defending, so Jurgen Klopp made a triple substitution.

Dzeko saw his shot charged down by Konate from eight yards, but Skriniar had to do the same moments later on Luis Diaz.

Dzeko tried to set up Dumfries rather than go for goal and it was intercepted, on the corner Dumfries saw his header skim the crossbar.

Just as Inter were knocking hard at the door, they were caught out when Roberto Firmino’s glancing header met a Robertson corner at the near post and flicked it past Samir Handanovic.

It has happened so many times in the Champions League this season, Inter dominating for long periods and not making any of it count with goals.

Perisic fired first-time inches over the bar from the edge of the area, but once again Liverpool were lucky with Salah’s scuffed shot squirming its way through a sea of legs for 2-0.

Inter 0-2 Liverpool

Firmino 75 (L), Salah 83 (L)

  1. Inter clearly missed Barella but Liverpool were still superior regardless. Inter looked knackered at half time as they had to run all over the place just to keep up. A better second half, but again they looked drained towards the end. Dominant within their own four walls just like Rube, but amateurs when they meet a bigger club on the world stage. This is not surprising as Italian clubs play slow where as English clubs are fitter, more athletic and play on turbo drive. Rube fans should not get too excited as Villarreal will humiliate them and if they were facing Liverpool, Allegri would have gone full 11-0-0 with Vlahovic playing as a defender for the first time in his career.

  2. I did not watch the match, but it seemes like Inter made a decent effort. Liverpool, unfortunately, broke Inter’s nose, but Inter is still alive. I say they should forget about tonight’s result and go and do something similar in the return. Forza Italia!

  3. Gamal, which team do you support kid? juve who in recent seasons were eliminated by Ajax, Lyon and Porto? And haven’t won CL since 1996? Or Milan who finished bottom of their group?

  4. Well all knew beforehand that prInter is nowhere near the level of Liverpool but nonetheless it’s a pleasure to see fans of the second team from Milan trying to find alibis and pointing fingers at anything but their pathetic team. Ridiculous.

  5. I was rooting for Inter (despite being Juve fan) but Liverpool were clearly superior and deserved to win. Inter players were exhausted in the final 10 minutes. Good effort from Inter. Forza Juve!

  6. @bitter tony, what team do you support? Let me guess, that team must be suck and disgraceful in UCL and don’t help Italian football in UEFA rankings. I tell you what. Unlike Inter, Juve will beat Villareal and Liverpool and you will go back to your cave with full of bitterness… 🤣

  7. Ramarren the biggest team in Milano, but actually the third biggest team in Italy lost to the Liverpool C team in the group stages at home, and they were already on their Christmas holidays. The third biggest team in Italy could not even manage a win against Porto home or away. It should be of no surprise that Liverpool won tonight as the PL have the deepest pockets. It is also worth considering that Italian clubs take their serie a approach into Europe and the real giants of the game treat that pace as a training ground routine. Heaven forbid if any team came up against Man City. If so let it be Juve as it would be great to see them lose 15-0 over two legs.

  8. To milanwizz: England is simply cricket country and italy is totaly football nation, england will never reach italy level in football, all they can do is simply to use arabs and oligarchs money and buy all best players from Serie A and try to weaken them somehow because they cant do nothing else. Inter could win this 5-0 easily, total dominance, just unlucky today. Now will come to Anfield not for defending positive result, but like prodators to humiliate them, its not over yet!

  9. BTW england are rubbish comparing to Italy in football. Total fake rubbish like messi comparing to CR7

  10. To Juvenesia: where do you feel benefits if Juves opponents are losing in europe? Is there honour to be fighting in league of losers and be king of losers? Where do you see it good for Italian football Azzuri and where is it good for you?

  11. Decent effort by Inter but, as usual, Serie A sides just aren’t up to in in Europe.

The tie is as good as over, but at least they showed they can a play a bit, unlike Milan, who folded to Liverpool’s youth side.

It’s been 12 seasons since Serie A won the CL, and it’ll hardly be this season either.

How long will we have to wait for a CL or EL trophy?

  12. Do you see beneits if Serie A will drop to 7th place in league rankings and when Juve will struggle and get 3rd place and will not play in champions league where do you see something good when italian teams doing bad in europe?

  13. To FERBAN: how long? As long as Italy club will not become united at least in europe, this will destroy them if this phylosophy of such insane rivalry will not end, this is answer for you HOW LONG…

  14. @Forza Juve, as a fellow Juventino I will never give that club any credit and mentioning that they could have won 5-0 is taking it too far. I admit that effort that hit the bar could have changed things, but that is football. Shinter were running around and using up so much energy just chasing Liverpool who were never under much threat apart from a 15 minute period in the second half. Also there is no point in mocking the English for investing in their brand. They were once the laughing stock of Europe, from the 80’s to 90’s, but they changed and pursued a winning business strategy. The problem with Italians in general is that we never like to change, adapt and think ahead. Our stadiums have never been upgraded since 1990 and we are always playing catch up and being jealous and hanging onto the past will never make us learn and move forward.

  15. I aggree its soon should be time to let in arabs and oligarchs money and let them make italian calcio their (big fat old kids) playground… Because with these principes and not wanting to change from 1990 can really make Serie A 7th league in europe. Its time to think in front and stop that insane rivalry first of all!

  16. @Forza Juve, I support Juve and Juve only. Inter is Juve opponent, their demise is my happiness. IDGAF about other matters

  17. @Forza Juve

That’s only the tip of the iceberg. Rival Italian fans supporting each other in Europe won’t change the quality of the football/players/Serie A.

There’s a mountain to climb for Serie A to be relevant in Europe again.

But I still think we’ll be talking about new stadiums in 10 years – like we were 10 years, when Roma and Milan were moving. Well, they still haven’t moved.

  18. I am different tipe of tifosi, I totaly not feel big rivalry between italian clubs, just I support Juve in Serie A, but when I saw now our such dominance for 9 years I not feel jealous at all to let now win someone else…

  19. Good match for Inter, this is football you have to accept results win or loss and it is not the end of the world, Forza Inter forever we love you 🖤💙

  20. I am different tipe also because I am not Italian, but Lithuanian, support Italy national team with all my heart from 1994 when I was 7 years old… and this being total Azzuri fan never made my hater of any Serie A side… I always support everyone in europe very much… because in every team is playing Azzuri players, feel total nationalism , I think even bigger than actual italians feel

  21. I am different tipe also because I am not Italian, but Lithuanian, support Italy national team with all my heart from 1994 when I was 7 years old… and this being total Azzuri fan never made my hater of any Serie A side…

  22. Inter made a Decent effort ? by getting 0 shots on net ? LOL Liverpool has 7 Champions League wins this season ………. that is more than inter has in the last 3 seasons and that is your idea of a decent effort ? let me remind you that of those wins, 2 came against a team from Moldova, one from the Ukraine and 1 from the Czech Republic ! Face it, Inter’s bench is just too weak to play in Champions League.

  23. Carl,

Juve lost at Chelsea when both teams were already qualfied. Whereas Juve beat Chelsea in Matchday 2. Chelsea got pimped in Russia versus Zenit.

Also. Italy lifted the European Championships in your National Stadium. So have at it. Your foreigners are better than ours — Congrats, bro.

    🤐

  24. Sorry for being terse in my message, ‘Forza Juve’.

Just want Italians to straighten out their football themselves.

  25. Brandon my words about these arabs was just ironic, but reality is that now we still not see nothing winning italian clubs and always will need to keep losing to cricket nations clubs…

  26. THIS GAME SHOWED THAT WE DESPERATELY NEED 2 NEW MIDFIELDERS AND 2 FAST STRIKERS NEXT SEASON. BOTH LAUTARO AND DZEKO HAS NO PACE, SADLY. AS MUCH AS I LIKE LAUTARO, HE WILL NEVER BE ELITE, HE HAS TECHNIQUE AND TOUGHNESS BUT THAT IS IT. BOZOVIC IS 30 THIS YEAR. MIDFIELD BENCH IS CRAP. INTER PRETTY MUCH ONLY HAVE 3 GOOD MIDFIELDERS PLAYING ALL THE GAMES

IT WAS A GOOD EFFORT FROM THE WHOLE SQUAD. INZAGHI HAS BUILT A SOLID TEAM. WE JUST NEED 3 NEW GOOD SIGNINGS AND WE GOOD.

WHO ELSE IS READY TO RAGE?

  27. BY THE WAY

TO ALL THE JUBE FANS COMING OUT WEARING THE “QUATERFINAL PARTICIPATION” MEDALS AND CELEBRATE LIKE A THEY WIN THE CHAMPION LEAGUE

THE LAST TIME JUBE WON THE MOST PRESTIGOUS CHAMPION LEAGUE WAS MORE THAN A QUARTER CENTURY AGO

    LET THAT SINK IN

MAYBE TRY WINNING IT ONCE IN A WHILE, WILL YA

  28. As a Juve fan, I was actually supporting Inter! I dont hate Liverpool but I think it is a sick joke they have won 2UCLs and only 1 league title.
Inter edged the game, and had more chances. They missed a lot of good chances, especially Dzeko. It was the same as their losses to RM in the group.
I dont think Inter are out of it yet, but they need to wise up and take chances.
For Juve, it will be much more defensive than Inter in Europe, and taking the chances will be even more important.

  29. @INTERRAGE, “THIS GAME SHOWED THAT WE DESPERATELY NEED 2 NEW MIDFIELDERS AND 2 FAST STRIKERS NEXT SEASON.”

NOPE! Actually, PrInter* need to create another CALCIOPOLI AND SCANDALS to win Champions League. Get it trough your head. Forza prInter 0-2!

*Credit to fellow Juve fan (i forget his name) who wrote it on another post. 😀

  30. As an Acmilan fan, seeing most of the comments here, I don’t think most of you watched the game. In my opinion, it wasn’t a fair result and it definitely didn’t reflect the performance of inter. Comparing inter’s squad to Liverpool in terms of quality and experience, I think inter’s team tonight was superior. First half was 50/50 and they had more chances than Liverpool and the second half was all Inter before the goal. In my opinion, I think the difference was the quality and experience of the coaches and a little bit of luck because Liverpool substitute made the difference and not to forget, Liverpool are used to winning. In as much as I hate to say it, Inter were superb and if they had won, it would have been a total humiliation for Liverpool. Just like last season Europa League between Man United and Milan🤨
As for Hakan, He’s playing with more determination and freedom and I think he’s a better player at inter than he was at Milan, he just has to focus on his own business and stop looking forward to Milan’s failure like he’s trying to prove a point!
Ya all keeps criticizing Milan against Liverpool. They had already qualified, rested some players and were playing with absolutely no pressure… No one seems to recall the performances against Athletico or come back against Liverpool at Anfield.

  31. @Debu

Do you ever read what you write? There is a reason why during Jube’s stretch of serie A dominance, they could not amount to anything in Europe. There is a reason why Jube is the only team that during its stint as Italian champions cannot win the champion league

Because Jube won Calcio thanks to Calciopoli

That’s why they went to serie B and Moggi went to jail

That Jube team was no where near champion league’s level or even serie A champ level
