Romelu Lukaku was unhappy with Simone Inzaghi’s decisions in the second part of 2022-23 and the exclusion from the starting XI in the Champions League Final reportedly convinced the striker to drop Inter.

Lukaku won’t return to the Stadio Meazza in 2023-24. The Belgian didn’t reply to Inter directors earlier this week, opening talks with Juventus. It is no secret that the 30-year-old was unhappy with Inzaghi’s decisions in the second part of the campaign.

The Italian tactician repeatedly benched Lukaku in big games, starting Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martinez in attack even if the Belgian looked in shape in the final two months of 2022-23 with seven goals in the last eight Serie A games.

The same happened in the Champions League Final against Manchester City and, according to Sunday’s printed edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (page 4), starting on the bench in Istanbul eventually convinced Lukaku to drop the Nerazzurri.

The striker didn’t feel at the centre of Inzaghi’s project, so he decided not to reply to the directors forcing them to end negotiations with Chelsea.
