Former Inter goalkeeper Júlio César has refuted comparisons of the situation between Samir Handanović and André Onana to himself and Francesco Toldo.

Onana’s arrival this summer means Inter effectively have two first-choice goalkeepers and there has been no indication as to whether one will be preferred to the other or if they will be rotated.

The situation is similar to when Júlio César joined in 2005 and had to battle with Toldo for the No. 1 spot but the former Brazil international said it was not right to make comparisons.

Speaking to Calcio e Finanza, he said: “I prefer not to speak about other goalkeepers’ work because we don’t know what happens in training, in their life or in their head.

“And anyway, it is always difficult making comparisons from different eras. I have a lot of respect for all of them.”

Inter supporters will be hopeful the new goalkeeper battle brings about even a fraction of that the previous one did.

Júlio César won Serie A titles in each of his first five seasons, with Toldo battling him for No 1 spot in each.

Toldo left in 2010 after Inter had won the Treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League.
