Alessio Cerci was not surprised by Juventus’ defeat to Olympiacos last night, and spoke of his joy at scoring his first goal for Atletico Madrid.

The former Torino winger joined Atleti in the summer, and came off the bench during his side’s own defeat in Athens.

“Juventus' defeat in Athens? It doesn’t surprise me,” Cerci is quoted as saying by the Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Olympiacos are a good team, especially at home. We also lost to them there.

“But at the moment I’m only interested in Atletico and the fact we’re now top of the group.

“Now we have great determination to tackle these last three games and hold on to first place in the group.”

Cerci scored his first goal for Atletico during a 5-0 victory over Malmo, and the Italy international admits he’s starting to settle in the Spanish capital, after a difficult few months.

“I’m happy about the team’s victory, and for my first goal in the Champions League which I wanted so much.

“I haven’t played much since I came here, but the important thing is to always be ready, and I was.

“I knew when I arrived it would be tough, and I’d have to make the most of my opportunities.

“I’ve come here with great enthusiasm, knowing the competition is for places is very tough here, as it is in all the big European clubs, but I know I’ve got a lot to offer.

“I knew that after arriving here on the last day of the transfer window, I’d need time to get in shape.

“Physically I feel good now, I just need to play from the start.”
