Alessandro Nesta, one of the strongest defenders in the history of the Italian national team, turns 46 today, making it the perfect time to look back at his impressive playing career.
Nesta started his career in Lazio’s youth system, often playing against Francesco Totti at various levels as the two players grew up together in the Italian capital. He became a figurehead of Sergio Cragnotti’s squad, playing 261 games and being the hero in their second even Scudetto success.
He was forced to leave his childhood club in the summer of 2002 due to financial issues, joining Milan in a deal worth around €31m. He spent 10 years with the Rossoneri, making 362 appearances and helping them to win a number of major honours including two Champions League titles and two Scudetti.
Nesta was a core part of the Azzurri squad in this period, making 78 caps for the national team as he took part in three World Cups and two European Championships. He became a world champion in 2006, the highlight of an incredible career.
The former Lazio and Milan defender won a long list of trophies, picking up the following throughout his career: three Coppa Italia, four Supercoppa Italiana, three Scudetti, one Cup Winners’ Cup, three European Super Cups, two Champions Leagues, one Club World Cup and one World Cup.
