Cavani wanted a three-year contract worth €10m per season net, which was simply beyond Benfica’s capabilities, especially for a 33-year-old.

His most likely destination is now Atletico Madrid, who had already been in advanced talks with the Uruguay international’s entourage a few weeks ago.
