Salernitana President Danilo Iervolino confirms he is trying to bring former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani back to Serie A. ‘It came to me in a dream.’

The 35-year-old centre-forward is of course no stranger to Italy or the Campania region, where Salernitana are based, because he spent several years at Napoli and before that in Sicily with Palermo.

Now he is a free agent and could return to the Peninsula for Salernitana, who just avoided relegation with a miraculous late surge up the standings.

“Cavani is a suggestion that came to me in a dream,” Iervolino told Il Mattino newspaper.

“He is a player wanted by some of the most important clubs in Europe, he wants to play in the Champions League, but the doors of Salernitana remain open.

“Cavani is an extraordinary player and if he wants to get a house on the Amalfi coast, he can certainly have that.”

Salernitana already have Franck Ribery on their books, while Cavani had a decent season at Manchester United, scoring two goals and providing one assist in just 910 minutes of football.

He spent five years in Italy, coming to Palermo in January 2007 before moving on to Napoli in 2010 and was sold to Paris Saint-Germain for €65m in 2013.

There were 112 goals in 212 Serie A appearances during his career between Napoli and Palermo.
