The young tactician, who impressed last term in leading Gli Elefanti to a record points haul in Serie A, has been heavily linked with the vacancy in Florence in recent weeks.

Originally resolute in trying to keep hold of the former Roma striker, Catania more recently admitted it would be difficult to have him stay.

That has now been followed by Monday evening’s news, via Sky Sport 24, that after a meeting held between the club, Montella and his representative, the parties have agreed to part ways. It is believed that the Coach’s contract with the Sicilians has now been terminated.

The 37-year-old is now expected to negotiate a deal with Fiorentina, whilst Catania will reportedly turn to one of Pasquale Marino and Michele Serena as his replacement.
