Salernitana boss Fabrizio Castori says he considers himself a modern coach ‘like Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola’ but adds he gets sleepy when he sees teams that make 100 passes.

Castori, 66, earned the second promotion to Italy’s top flight in his coaching career with Salernitana.

The first time was in 2015 with Carpi. Salernitana have returned to Serie A for the first time in 23 years.

“I am satisfied, I liked Serie A and I wanted to return there. I felt this was the right place,” Castori told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I am satisfied, I liked Serie A and I wanted to return there. I felt this was the right place,” Castori told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

Castori tested positive for COVID and had to miss three games before the final one against Pescara.

“Thank God, I didn’t have too many problems. I remained at home, alone for 20 days. I was sorry I could not be there to help the lads, but technology helped us,” Castori said.

“In Serie B, you need to run a lot. It’s essential with so many games and a tight fixture list. I kill my players, but my teams eventually win.

“I try to keep myself updated, but one doesn’t change his belief. I arrive in Serie A after winning in all the lower leagues, it means many ideas pay off.

“I get sleepy when I see teams that make 100 passes without a shot on target,” he continued.

“I consider myself a modern coach, like Jurgen Klopp, Diego  Simeone or Pep Guardiola. It’s the same thing Allegri says. My football is efficient. For me, horizontal passes in defence are useless.

“The opponents can take the ball home if they want, I prefer the three points. I don’t care about trends. What I care about is how quickly you can reach the goal.

“We are very organized. We don’t invent anything. To play like this, you must train hard. Everything is planned. Let me talk to the scientist that believes nice football is the one with 100 passes.”

Will his principles be enough for Serie A football next season?

“In terms of concepts, yes. Then players are needed. Atalanta and Verona are doing the same things that we do. Gasperini and Juric kill their players too to be more efficient in attack.”
