Antonio Cassano claims there are “only three champions in Serie A,” so is keeping himself in shape for the right opportunity.

The 35-year-old forward hasn’t played since 2016, as he was involved in a contract dispute with Sampdoria, then signed for Hellas Verona in pre-season only to quit two weeks into training.

Now he wants a comeback and assures he’s been keeping himself in shape.

“Fundamentally, I am still a player, because I train every day, but I don’t have any satisfying offers,” FantAntonio told the Corriere dello Sport newspaper.

“Everyone seems to think I retired and that I can’t hack it anymore, but that’s not true. I work harder than ever and if the right opportunity came along, I’d be happy and ready.

“I’m keeping my weight down, I don’t have a belly and I weigh 85kg, the same as when I went to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.”

Cassano gave an idea of what his days are like now that he is without a club.

“I wake up at around 7am, take the kids to school, then train from 8.30-9.30, return home for breakfast and dinner. At 14.30 there’s the second training session for 60-70 minutes and then at 16.30 I pick the kids up from school again.

“I stay with the kids until dinner time and we play. My life is marvellous like this.”

Yet one of the reasons Cassano wants a comeback is that he isn’t impressed with the current talent pool.

“There are only three champions in Serie A: Gonzalo Higuain, Miralem Pjanic and Gigi Buffon.”
