Antonio Cassano reveals he told Chelsea midfielder Jorginho it’d be ‘a scandal’ if he won the Ballon d’Or, and the Italy international agreed.

In public, Jorginho has shown interest in the rumours that he’ll be one of the favourites for the trophy, seeing as in 2021 he has won the Champions League, European Super Cup and UEFA EURO 2020.

Nonetheless, that argument did not convince Cassano, who would always give the award to Lionel Messi.

“Remember when I said any journalist who voted for Jorginho as Ballon d’Or should have his licence taken away?” Cassano told Christian Vieri on Bobo TV Twitch channel.

“Well, I was in Formentera with my family and just as I saw down, I felt a touch. ‘Antonio, you’re great!’ the voice says. I turn around to ask who he was, he took off his glasses and mask, and it was Jorginho!

“I told him, Jorgi, can you believe the scandal if they should give you the Ballon d’Or and not to Messi? He replied that he absolutely agreed with me, Messi should always win it.

“Now I admire Jorginho even more. We were talking for a good 90 minutes, he is an exceptional guy, very intelligent, humble and polite.”

  1. Can we please stop using Antonio Cassano as a news outlet? He’s the biggest simpleton in the footballing world and knows very little about the sport he tried to play for 20 years.

  2. I do. He is a fresh voice in a climate of tepid sports journalism where writers are shackled by their media (or agents or teams) and only repeat platitudes or ask questions about business matters or loaded questions that only beg turmoil. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard an Italian journalist ask a manager after his team has lost two games on the trot, “Do you think you are in jeopardy of being fired?” Like, what do you want the manager to say? I’d rathe listen to Cassano that journalists like that.

  3. He was brilliant as a footballer and being a simpleton isn’t always bad. He’s got good instinct honed from years of acting on it… He says what he wants without too many filters and he’s not the worst so let him speak. And you don’t have to listen. Saying Messi should get the ballon d’or. Pretty controversial…

  4. More of a scandal that Chiellini, and the player of the tournament aren’t shortlisted. Somehow though De Bruyne with all of his continental and international titles is. UEFA’s bias vs Italian players continues. If Jorginho had an Italian name, he wouldn’t be nominated.
