Former Inter, Milan, Roma and Sampdoria striker Antonio Cassano has been hospitalised with complications from COVID-19.

The 39-year-old retired in 2018 after 400 Serie A appearances, in which he scored 112 goals.

His wife Carolina Marcialis had confirmed via social media that Cassano tested positive for COVID-19 over the Christmas holidays and was self-isolating at home.

It had been widely reported that Cassano was not vaccinated, but Marcialis announced via Instagram Stories that he has received two doses and hasn’t yet had the booster.

According to Genova Today, Il Messaggero and other sources, his condition deteriorated over the last couple of days and Cassano is now an in-patient at the San Martino hospital in Genoa.

Marcialis wrote on Instagram Stories: “Antonio is in hospital and doing well.”

He is not the first former player to have been hospitalised with complications from COVID-19, as Cassano’s Roma teammate Daniele De Rossi needed supplemental oxygen in April 2021.
