Sassuolo director Giovanni Carnevali believes West Ham was the best option for Gianluca Scamacca, even ‘better than PSG’ and confirms the Neroverdi wanted to sign Hector Bellerin from Arsenal.

Carnevali commented on Sassuolo’s big sales of the summer that saw Scamacca join West Ham on a permanent €36m deal.

PSG had also opened talks with the Serie A side, but the Hammers eventually reached an agreement with Sassuolo.

“No Italian team made an offer to sign him, PSG were the first club to talk to us,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“In the end, we reached an agreement with West Ham and we had to say no to PSG, but I think it’s the right step for the player.”

Giacomo Raspadori was the other big name leaving Sassuolo. The Italy international joined Napoli on loan with an option to buy for €30m.

Domenico Berardi remained at the Mapei Stadium, extending his contract until 2027, but Sassuolo failed to get Bellerin from Arsenal with the Spaniard, who eventually joined Barcelona.

“Domenico is our best signing, he has renewed for five years. He had received offers, but he will become a point of reference for the newcomers.

“Bellerin? We lost the race against Barcelona, it can happen,” he said smiling.

Sassuolo forced Milan to a 0-0 draw at the Mapei Stadium on Tuesday and have collected five points in the opening four Serie A games.

Scamacca has scored two goals in six appearances with the Hammers across all competitions.
