Atalanta announced that Italy Under-21 goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi has undergone shoulder surgery, so is expected to be out for circa four months, prompting a change of plan for Lazio and Cremonese.

The shot-stopper had the keyhole surgery today and it was declared a complete success.

According to reports, Carnesecchi will have to be out of action for three months, plus another month for rehabilitation.

This effectively rules out his planned transfer to Lazio, where he had been the first choice for coach Maurizio Sarri to replace Thomas Strakosha.

It is also a change of plan for other clubs, because Carnesecchi spent this season on loan at Cremonese, helping them earn promotion from Serie B in second place.

The goalkeeper, who turns 22 next month, could therefore remain with Cremonese on loan in Serie A and make his way back to fitness with them.

He will be hoping to make a full recovery by the time Italy get to play in the European Under-21 Championship next summer.
