An injury to Atalanta-owned goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi has forced Lazio into a change of plan, battling Fiorentina for Empoli goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

With Thomas Strakosha released as a free agent and Pepe Reina also looking elsewhere, the Biancocelesti don’t have a goalkeeper right now.

They had been in advanced talks with Atalanta to sign Carnesecchi, the Italy Under-21 international shot-stopper who spent this season on loan at Cremonese, the club that finished second in Serie B and earned promotion.

However, Carnesecchi – who turns 22 next month – sustained a shoulder injury on international duty and will be out for circa three months following surgery.

This forces Lazio to find an alternative and La Gazzetta dello Sport and Sky Sport Italia maintain the next target is Vicario.

The 25-year-old impressed on loan at Empoli this season and they made the move permanent for €10m from Cagliari.

That means he will cost at least €12-13m to sell on this summer and that is not something Lazio are eager to pay.

A cheaper option is Sergio Rico, owned by PSG and fresh from a loan at Real Mallorca, who could be available on a temporary transfer.

Granada goalkeeper Luis Maximiliano is another candidate, although he too would be expensive.
