Napoli legend Antonio Careca maintains Romelu Lukaku is a better striker than Mauro Icardi. “The Argentine doesn’t make the difference.”

Lukaku was brought in from Manchester United for €65m plus bonuses, a club record, while Icardi moved to PSG on loan with €75m option to buy.

“Icardi could’ve played for Napoli and nobody would’ve blocked it. That’s a real shame,” Scudetto winner Careca told Il Giorno newspaper.

“Icardi could’ve played for Napoli and nobody would’ve blocked it. That’s a real shame,” Scudetto winner Careca told Il Giorno newspaper.

“The Argentine is a good forward, but not a phenomenal one. I believe Lukaku is a better player. I just don’t think Icardi makes the difference.”

Brazilian Careca also discussed the current Serie A scene, which has been dominated by Juventus for eight years.

“They say the English league is the best now, but I don’t believe that. There are a lot of foreigners in Italy, but the level remains high. What Serie A needs is more Coaches capable of recognising the potential of a player and getting that out of them.”

He also revealed the tactical approach for Napoli’s title win was rather simple.

“Ottavio Bianchi instilled discipline to us and the fans. The team had one objective: pace. We knew the second ball had to reach Diego Maradona, because he was impossible to mark.”
