RedBird chief Gerry Cardinale is present for Milan’s opening game of the Serie A season against Bologna. ‘I must be clear, RedBird are here to win. But we are here to win in an intelligent way, long-term and not just once.’

It kicks off at the Stadio Dall’Ara at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

The Rossoneri debut with three new signings in the starting XI, Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tijjani Reijnders.

They are set to bring in a ninth buy of the summer late tonight when Marco Pellegrino arrives for his medical from Platense.

“I could not miss out the start of the season that is more challenging than ever, both in Italy and Europe,” said Cardinale in a statement released to the media.

“As we have underlined many times, our objective is to continue improving so we can win, both in Serie A and on a global level. But we cannot do that without being open to changes and new approaches. And, in the current scenario, our capacity to successfully make for a positive evolution on and off the field can only work with a smart and sophisticated financial approach.

“However, let us not be mistaken. I want to be very clear that RedBird are here to win. But we are here to win in an ‘intelligent’ way, because we want to win long-term, not just the once.

“We might not always do well, but we will not stop trying until we have won everything possible.

“This will be a long and difficult season, but I am certain that our lads under the guidance of coach Pioli will face it with the passion deserving of this glorious club.

“We have many new faces that we give an enthusiastic welcome to Milanello. We will continue to accompany and support our team in every moment of this new journey with great effort and a passion to match the one they will put onto the field, aided by the extraordinary support they receive in the stands.

“So tonight, more than ever, let me say: Forza Milan, sempre!”

Milan reached the Champions League semi-final last season, but RedBird caused a great deal of controversy when sacking directors Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara.

They have been trying to win the fans back over the summer by going on a spending spree with nine new signings and backing coach Stefano Pioli in his change of system to 4-3-3.
