Cagliari sporting director Stefano Capozucca insists it was correct to revoke a penalty kick for Benevento after a VAR check: 'We stole nothing.'
The Sardinians snatched a 3-1 win over Filippo Inzaghi’s side yesterday, but there was controversy when Benevento were awarded a penalty for a Kwadwo Asamoah challenge on Nicolas Viola with five minutes remaining. Cagliari were 2-1 up.
It was then revoked after the referee Daniele Doveri saw it again on VAR, ruling that Viola had looked for the contact.

Benevento President Oreste Vigorito vented his frustration after the final whistle.
“I have never talked about referees, but I received messages from Naples and others who told me they send Mazzoleni as the VAR when they want to kill the centre-south clubs,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
Quite understandably, Capozucca believes Daniele Doveri’s decision was correct.
“Asamoah kept his foot to the floor and Viola looked for the contact,” the Cagliari director told ANSA.
“I am sorry nobody highlights Cagliari won 13 points out of 15 in the last five games. We played a smart game in Benevento and we stole nothing," he continued.
“In the reverse fixture, we had a goal disallowed for a contact between Pavoletti and Montipò, which wasn’t particularly strong.
“Episodes can change an entire season, but I want to repeat yesterday’s penalty kick would have been unfair as it was clear the player looked for the contact.”
