Former coach Fabio Capello said the referee ‘ruined’ Milan’s ‘splendid’ performance in the 2-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

The Rossoneri started the match in the best possible way and pegged the La Liga champions back, eventually scoring the opening goal through Rafael Leao.

Franck Kessie’s sending off and the controversial penalty decision in stoppages of the second half helped Atleti claim all the spoils in the fashion capital.

Why VAR should’ve revoked Atletico Madrid penalty against Milan

Capello said the refereeing mistakes at San Siro were ‘serious’ and believes referee Cuneyt Cakir should have been given more help by VAR.

“Milan played well, with great quality,” Capello told Sky Sport Italia. “They showed some splendid things. But the match was ruined by the referee.

“This referee oversaw a Final in the Champions League too, but I don’t think he was up to it. He wasn’t helped by VAR.

“What happened at San Siro is very serious.”

  1. He is 100% correct, the ref did ruin the game and it is very serious. Milan win that game, even draw it, and we have a chance to get out of the group. Ref and VAR need to go on a training course or something because neither of them performed as they should have.

  2. The VAR team were all Turks. Surprise, Surprise.
