Former England manager Fabio Capello predicts ‘a good test’ tonight with Italy in the EURO 2024 qualifier, praising Luciano Spalletti for ‘being able to get into the heads of his players.’

It kicks off at Wembley Stadium at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).

In order to prepare for the big match in London, the Italian Embassy hosted an event that included Capello, former Chelsea striker Gianfranco Zola and current West Ham United defender Angelo Ogbonna.

“England at this moment have some big talents and a very strong midfield. I see a few problems in defence for them, but it is a strong team and represents a good test for Italy,” Capello told Tuttomercatoweb.

The Nazionale lost 2-1 in Naples back in March, by which time Roberto Mancini already seemed to be distracted and losing control of the squad.

He then resigned in August, leaving just days to find a replacement, so Spalletti was appointed on September 1.

“Spalletti’s greatest strength is being able to get into the heads of his players, so I really like that. I also like his looking to the symbol of Italy, giving strength to that word. Tactically, he is very interesting, but I do feel joy hearing him talk about that concept of togetherness.”

There are going to be changes compared to the 4-0 win over Malta, including Gianluca Scamacca upfront and the first start for Tottenham Hotspur defender Destiny Udogie.

“Scamacca needs a few more games to prove himself, especially as with his height he needs time to get into shape. I think Spalletti has something interesting going on psychologically with the players and wants to see a reaction, which is fundamental to achieve success,” added Capello.

“Udogie impressed, he is young, like Giorgio Scalvini. Then there is Francesco Acerbi, who brings experience and knows how to guide the others.”
