Fabio Capello believes Marco Verratti would have been the MVP in PSG-Real Madrid if it wasn’t for Kylian Mbappé, but claims that Leo Messi is ‘sad’ in Paris.
A late Mbappé goal helped PSG win the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 at the Parc des Princes last night. The French striker produced an absolute stunner, allowing the Ligue1 giants to qualify for the quarter-finals even with a draw at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 9.
Marco Verratti was also one of the best players on the pitch and Fabio Capello says the Italy international would have been crowned MVP if it wasn’t for the French star.
“Verratti would have been the Man of the Match without Mbappé, who was the absolute MVP,” Capello told Sky Sport Italia.
“Verratti played a great game dominating in midfield.”
However, there was not just good news for the Ligue 1 giants who saw Leo Messi miss a penalty kick in the second half. It was not his only mistake of the night.
“It’s impossible to think that Messi has lost himself in six months,” acknowledged Capello. “However, he didn’t even complete one dribbling and to me he is sad.”
Isn’t time we accept that we have reached the point where we have moved on from Messi and Ronaldo? The folly of Messi winning ballon d’or becomes more evident by the day, but we are talking about players at the end of their careers in their mid 30’s.

Ronaldo is a goal-scoring monster and continues to be so. Hasn’t played well? What are you talking about? He might not be the right man for every team but it is undeniable that he is still one of the most prolific goal scorers ever.
