Fabio Capello believes that Inter remain the strong favourites to reclaim the Serie A title in 2026-27 and feels that the bridge between the Nerazzurri and their rivals Juventus and Milan is becoming increasingly difficult to bridge.
Capello gives analysis of Juventus and Milan: ‘Not a Spalletti side yet, Amorim needs an Italian core’
The legendary former head coach shared his thoughts on the current state of affairs at the top of Serie A in his La Gazzetta dello Sport column on Tuesday.
The clock is ticking and there is now less than a fortnight to go until the start of the 2026-27 Serie A season. The Corriere dello Sport front page at the beginning of this week claimed that the top sides in Serie A are still ‘missing’ 20 starters among them and that the time is running out to bring them all over to Italy.
This is a sentiment that Capello agrees with: “The distance between them (Milan and Juventus) and Inter, the champions of Italy, seems difficult to bridge in such a short space of time,” the former Rossoneri and Bianconeri head coach wrote in his La Gazzetta dello Sport column.
“Juventus don’t yet seem like a Luciano Spalletti side to me and Milan look like an open construction site: Only the work in progress sign is missing, yet the start of the Serie A season is just around the corner,” he added.
Capello says that he is encouraged by Juve’s signings of Randal Kolo Muani and Kerim Alajbegovic, but feels that the defence is in need of improvement and that a new goalkeeper is a priority.
Despite reports that Juventus could look to sign Zion Suzuki on loan from from PSG should he join the Parisians from Parma this summer, Capello believes that Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario is the stronger option.
“Juve still has a big problem and that is the goalkeeper,” Capello wrote. “I say that with all due respect to Michele Di Gregorio, but his situation seems irreversible to me.
“Many names have been mentioned and from what I’ve seen, the Old Lady might prefer a ‘buffer’ option, postponing the spending until next summer. So, if a no.1 comes in on loan, I have no doubts about who to bet on: Vicario at Tottenham.
“The reason is simple. Compared to Suzuki, the Italian has already shown that he performs well at big clubs, like he has done in London.”
Capello admits that he is troubled by the current situation at Milan though, particularly with the latest news that Mike Maignan and Adrien Rabiot have decided to extend their holidays until a week before the start of the Serie A season.
“Milan are still waiting for two big names in Maignan and Rabiot – by the way, I didn’t like the news of their return being delayed by four days at all. The new signings Gila and Ramos haven’t been seen much either, nor has the clear starting XI that Amorim will have in mind.
“But, I get the impression that there’s still a bit of confusion around the Rossoneri, starting with Rafael Leao’s situation. Rafa overestimated himself by publicly calling for the Premier League and, if he stays, I would be wary of the San Siro reaction to the first time he fails to run.
“I hope that the next meeting between Cardinale and Amorim will bring some order and provide the right boost to sort things out on the market heading into the final 20 days.
“One concept should be made clear, though: Milan must go back to having an Italian core. That’s why I hope the young lads Francesco Camarda, Christian Comotto, Davide Bartesaghi and Lorenzo Torriani remain in the squad.”
