Serie A returns today with Torino-Parma and Cagliari-Verona, then Atalanta-Sassuolo and Inter-Sampdoria on Sunday.

“Everything is wide open, including the Scudetto race, so it’s as if a new season is starting,” Capello told Il Giorno newspaper.

“This is a paradox that can generate real surprise results. We don’t know what shape the teams will be in, as some might’ve found something new during the lockdown training.

“I do believe those teams who played in the Coppa Italia will be more well-drilled than others, for example Lazio and Atalanta, who are yet to play.”

Juventus are top on 63 points, followed by Lazio on 62 and Inter (who have a game in hand) on 54, but the Bianconeri seemed very disappointing in the Coppa Italia Final with Napoli.

“It would be a very serious problem if Juve were to lose confidence because of that,” continued Capello. “Their strength has always been that they are never sated, so I believe Juventus will continue to be protagonists this season.

“If Inter beat Sampdoria, then they have an easier run-in compared to the other teams, so a run of victories could see them recapture the spirit Antonio Conte’s men had at the start of the season.”

The hiatus has given Conte the opportunity to change his tactics and bring Christian Eriksen in with a trequartista role.

“We already knew Eriksen was a great player, but he needed to find himself and it was a good performance against Napoli in the Coppa Italia. Now he has to make the difference, and losing Stefano Sensi to injury means he can have the space to express himself.”
