Fabio Capello feels Marcus Thuram’s goal miss in the second half against Atletico Madrid was a ‘decisive moment’ last night but still blames the Nerazzurri who did ‘not press’ the Colchoneros.

Inter were eliminated from the Champions League Round of 16 by Atletico Madrid on Wednesday after a defeat on penalties at the Civitas Metropolitano.

They had taken the lead in the first half through Federico Dimarco, but Antoine Griezmann equalised just two minutes later while Memphis Depay’s late strike sent the game to extra time and, eventually, a penalty shootout.

Italian media blamed Inter players, especially defenders and strikers, and former Milan and Juventus coach Fabio Capello also offered his view on the game.

The 77-year-old told Sky Sport that a Thuram error in the second half was crucial, even if it was not the only reason the Nerazzurri lost in the Spanish capital.

They didn’t play as they knew, they didn’t press, they didn’t run forward. Atletico Madrid players played as they wanted because Inter did not press them. There were moments when they woke up. They had a big chance with Thuram. It was a decisive moment. Oblak didn’t even have to save it. He didn’t shoot on the target. It wasn’t pleasant.”

Inter host Napoli in the next Serie A match at the Stadio Meazza on Sunday, March 17.
