Fabio Capello is concerned that Antonio Conte and President Aurelio De Laurentiis could ‘have difficulty co-existing’ at Napoli, while the pressure is on Thiago Motta at Juventus.

The legendary coach was at the Festival della Serie A in Parma and spoke to Tuttomercatoweb about the scenario shaping up in Serie A next season, where most of the clubs are undergoing a change of management.

“We will see something different and the capabilities of these emerging coaches,” said Capello.

The biggest adjustment would seem to be at Napoli, where after going through three tacticians in the post-Scudetto era, they have appointed Conte at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Meanwhile, Juventus are set to hand over the reins to former Bologna boss Thiago Motta after three years of Max Allegri.

“Motta has to get Juve back to winning ways, this is a club where just taking part is not enough. The same goes for Milan and Real Madrid, when you win it is considered something normal, not an achievement at all.

“Conte needs to wake up the players who were resting on their laurels and this is the most interesting situation. Conte will give them that aggression, the hunger to win and be protagonists. I think Conte is the right man to take Napoli back to the top.

“However, he could have difficulty co-existing with De Laurentiis and that is the most important issue they face.”

The transfer strategy also needs to be seen, especially as Napoli failed to qualify for Europe and are struggling to sell Victor Osimhen.

“You can be the best coach in the world, but if you don’t have the players… For example, the Champions League Final this year, Borussia Dortmund had three big chances to score, but would it have still been 0-0 had Real Madrid been given those opportunities? So all predictions depend on the players they have at their disposal.”

Capello eyes Spalletti with Italy

Luciano Spalletti is about to launch Italy into the EURO 2024 campaign after taking over from Roberto Mancini in September 2023.

“He has a difficult test, he did great things to take us to the Euros, but had so little time to really impose his ideas,” concluded Capello.

“It’s going to be tough, but he is the right man to take Italy back into the World Cup, because missing two in a row is very damaging.”
