Former Milan coach Fabio Capello said Gianluigi Donnarumma’s farewell ‘hurts more’ than Romelu Lukaku leaving Inter. ‘He didn’t bring a euro to the club’.

Two big profiles have left the fashion capital this summer, as Inter’s leading goalscorer in 2020-21, Lukaku, left the Nerazzurri and Italy international Donnarumma moved away from the Rossoneri.

Lukaku was brought back to Chelsea for €115m and Capello said the Belgian leaving thus hurts less than Donnarumma joining Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer.

The 22-year-old goalkeeper waited until his contract with the Diavolo expired in June before joining the Ligue 1 giants after becoming European champion with Italy.

“Lukaku’s farewell with Inter, technically weighs as much as Donnarumma leaving Milan,” Capello told La Repubblica.

“But Gigio didn’t bring a euro to the club, so it hurts more. The gratitude for those who raised you, helping your family, is due.”

  1. We need to move on. The club said that they’d known for a year that he wouldn’t extend his contract. They could’ve tried to get a fee for him last summer, but the reality is that him staying and helping the team to get back into the champions league was and is far more valuable.

Lukaku is a lifelong turncoat. Absolutely no credibility. Every single time he has had the chance to leave a club, he has taken it. Everton called, he left. Man Utd called, he left. Chelsea called, he left. Regardless of Inter‘s financial hardship, they had other assets they could’ve looked to move on IF Lukaku had put his foot down and wanted to stay. He is a mercenary. The epitome of self self absorption and egocentricity. His words are meaningless. An undoubted decent goalscorer, but a very very small man.

  2. Lukaku came to Milan and helped the team win Scudetto. Dollaruma was formed by Milan, didn’t win anything, at the age of 17 he was handed €6m net which in Italy is €12m, unheard of for such a young player and gk. then he left at the end of the contract spitting the hand and fans that fed and idolised him. What a miserable character!!

  3. @Rosario show some respect to lukaku…. I
Why didn’t Chelsea sign him from man u?
He gave everything for Inter in 2 years than icardi did in 6.
Chelsea knew Inter has financial crises so the gave both parties a deal of a lifetime.

  4. I agree with Capello. If he had a spine he would’ve signed a contract with a release clause and if PSG wanted him badly enough they would pay it, or at least close to it. It’s just such a snake move to leave people in the dark and then the club that has fulfilled his crazy wage demands, paid his brother a daft amount of money a season and given him the nurturing (sometimes hostile and rightfully so) environment to be able to be the person who he is today. Which other club is giving 16 year old goalkeepers (not outfield players, that happens occasionally) the chance to shine and develop at the highest level? I think he’s disrespected Milan and I fully expect him to come back to Italy in a few years time to Juve or whoever is rich at the time.

  5. The reason Milan gave him a “chance” at such a young age was because he deserved it (even though he was super young). He’s a phenomenon. His size and skill is best in the world. Maldini should have done more to hang on to this legend. Pay what he’s worth. Instead he played poker with his agent and brought in another goal keeper well before any deal with PSG was in place. Not to mention idiot Milan fans throwing fake cash at him instead of appreciating the kid. Of course he’s gonna leave after so much disrespect. Totally mishandled Italy’s greatest goalkeeper, just like so many other aspects of the club have been handled over the years. SHAME.

  6. @Kevin.
Respect is earned. I’m sure lukaku doesn’t care one bit what I think. He isn’t the only player who gave ‘everything’. His striking partner with a goal and assist contribution of 60 was also critical. So were the excellent midfield, brilliant defence and top keeper.
The financial situation of Inter being an issue is undoubted. But in lautaro, barella, Bostoni, skriniar, de vrij etc, inter had others to see to get money. If lukaku wasn’t a self serving turncoat, and had stuck by his words, he would’ve put his foot down and demanded to stay. He didn’t. The moment he was offered the move, he asked inter to leave. On top of that, he didn’t even have the decency of human qualities to salut the fans before leaving. His legacy with inter fans won’t be his goals or the 100m received. His legacy is that of being a mercenary and a two faced turncoat.

Ps. I’m a Milan fan. Not here standing up for inter or interisti. But I know filth when I see one.

  7. Jadon Sancho at City. Paul Pogba at United. There are a plethora of players that are now considered world class that were let go by clubs because they wouldn’t give them a chance. So many good Italian players fall through the cracks because they’re not given the chance. Milan gave him a chance, without it he wouldn’t be where he is and he showed absolutely no class, no sentiment, bare minimum professionalism in leaving the club that put both of his feet firmly on the ladder towards becoming one of the best goalkeepers of all time.

  8. @Chris.

Spot on. Gigio was allowed more opportunity than a youngster than any in Milan history. Granted, it was warranted. But it isn’t like he was spotless or didn’t make mistakes. He had a horrible Coppa Italia final, but the club and the fans were always on side. Many a clubs drop keepers post howlers or mistakes, but Milan allowed Donnarumma to hone his skills in tranquility and guarantee that he was the undisputed number one. Even Buffon at parma didn’t get that post an impressive debut. Without Milan’s trust and love, he would’ve never been where he is today.

  9. Good comments fellas, insightful. Dear FI is it possible to include a “thumbs up/like” or “thumbs down/dislike” option for posts?
There are some excellent posts here that I’d really like to single out and give a thumbs up. See if the techs can work out pls.

Forza Milan my fellow Milanisti! Just a few more days to KO!
