Manchester City full back Joao Cancelo highlighted the importance of his time in Italy ahead of his move to the Premier League.

The 27-year-old Portuguese full back has gone on to become one of the most impressive players in his position under coach Pep Guardiola, being a dynamic and creative attacking threat whilst also applying a good amount of defensive work.

Speaking in a press conference today, Cancelo first discussed his initial frictions with Guardiola following his move from Juventus.

“There were complications with the coach, of the way the team were playing. I had a different way of playing at Juventus, I wanted to enjoy football and enjoy playing.

“It was my responsibility more than the coach, it was my fault. I recovered with my desire to win in life and in football.

“I’m happy and credit to me because there was a lot of desire to become the player I am today.”

The 27-year-old Portuguese full back commented on the importance of playing in Italy for his development.

“Italy was very important for my career, Inter and Juve, two huge clubs. Pep has been huge tactically.

“Technically I have always been good, tactically I improved a lot in Italy. It was a time of learning, I liked living in Turin and Milan.”

The statistics highlight Cancelo’s incredible performances at Manchester City under Guardiola. In the last 365 days, he ranks in the 99th percentile against other full backs for progressive carries, progressive passes, attempted passes and shots taken, whilst also making a large number of tackles and interceptions.

The Portuguese full back spent two years of his career in Italy, first spending a year on loan with Inter before spending a year in Turin with Juventus.

  1. People say Cancelo was a big loss for Juve with the exchange with Danilo, but Danilo has been excellent for Juve. His ability to play RB/LB, CB and DM is invaluable, particularly when injuries hit the team. He is consistently good and occasionally chips in with an important goal like he did yesterday. I would say it was a win-win for both clubs.
