Rafael Leao was wanted by Chelsea late in the summer transfer window but Milan refused to let him go, and now the 23-year-old is ready to put on a show at Stamford Bridge.

The Portuguese forward was the Serie A MVP last season after playing a key role for Stefano Pioli in the Rossoneri’s Scudetto charge, scoring 11 goals and providing 10 assists in 34 league games. Leao has continued his exploits this campaign, scoring four and providing four in seven Serie A matches.

Chelsea did not submit an official offer for Leao in the summer but Milan confirmed that informal ideas were floated, something they refused to seriously consider as they look to retain the talented forward. Leao’s contract expires with Milan in 2024 and the club are desperately hoping for a renewal, but it’s unclear if he’ll put pen to paper or not.

Blues coach Graham Potter paid particular attention to Leao during his pre-match press conference, praising the Portuguese star.

“I’ve been really impressed with him whenever I’ve watched the games. He is making a difference for Milan and is contributing to how they attack and score goals. So congratulations to him for that.

“He is a top player. In terms of what happens in the future, who knows whether he can do this or not? He has the capability for sure from what I’ve seen because he is affecting the game at the highest level against top opponents.”

Tonight’s Champions League clash at Stamford Bridge gives Leao the perfect opportunity to flex his muscles on the European stage and essentially advertise his qualities to Chelsea, although with reports that they’ve agreed a pre-contract with RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku, he may not make the move to West London after all.

Milan currently sit top of Group E and a win against Chelsea would allow them to put one foot in the Round of 16, so Leao will be hoping to be the hero in a thrilling Champions League encounter.

  1. Vogel almost got it right – it ended 3 nil Chelsea. Leao and company were awful. They thought it was going to be a walk in the park. A nice beat down to bring Milan back to reality! LOL
