Jose Callejon says his move to Napoli was ‘wise’, as he asserts that he would never accept an offer from Barcelona or Atletico Madrid.

The forward is currently the joint-top goalscorer in Serie A with eight goals to his name, and his good form at the Stadio San Paolo has earned him a debut call-up to the Spain squad for their upcoming matches against Belarus and Germany.

The forward is currently the joint-top goalscorer in Serie A with eight goals to his name, and his good form at the Stadio San Paolo has earned him a debut call-up to the Spain squad for their upcoming matches against Belarus and Germany.

Callejon joined Napoli from Real Madrid last summer, but he was and continues to be linked with a return to Spain, with Barcelona and more prominently Atletico Madrid said to be on the radar.

For the winger, however, focus is just on his current club, where he recognises his advancement.

“Moving away was wise. I'm the top scorer in the Italian league, and I am playing well,” Callejon has reflected this week on Radio Cope.

“I found a Coach in Rafa Benitez who has given me great confidence. He's also found a player who gives everything on the pitch.

“Links with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid? I've never received any offers or heard from them, and I'd never accept their offers because I'm a Madridista.”

Callejon is speaking to the Spanish media this week in build-up to his first involvement with the senior national team.

“I want to prove that I can be a part of this team for a long time.

“I'm happy, my family and friends sent me photos of the newspapers in Spain. I'm going through a good moment at my club, and physically I'm fine.”

On the topic of his former Coach Jose Mourinho, Callejon added: “I owe a lot to Mourinho. I had a few good years under him. I won trophies and grew as a player.

“He was both tough and kind to me. I sent him a message when I became a father.”
