Jose Maria Callejon admits Napoli are “angry, but optimistic for the future” following their Champions League elimination.
The Partenopei amassed 12 points – as many as Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal – but went out on goal difference in the head-to-head record.
“We knew that we were in the most difficult group, so we had to win and hope for a good result from Marseille,” he told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.
“Unfortunately, Borussia scored right at the end. We are angry and felt powerless in the circumstances, but we leave this competition with our heads held high.
“It’s a real shame to see that in other groups teams managed to qualify with only six or eight points, while we went out with 12.”
Callejon also revealed an extra twist to the pain of Borussia Dortmund’s last-gasp winner in France.
“For us ex-Real Madrid players it’s a real blow, because once again we have been eliminated by Borussia. We have to look to the future with optimism. We want to do well in Serie A and go far in both the Coppa Italia and Europa League.”
