The Norwegian winger has not been in Milan’s starting line-up since mid-January and reports in Norway have suggested the 21-year-old could move on loan next season to find valuable playing time elsewhere.

Ahead of Turkey’s clash with Norway in Oslo, Calhanoglu said he wants Hauge to stay at San Siro in 2021-22.

“That’s a question for his agent,” Calhanoglu told Norwegian newspaper VG. “But if you ask me, I will ask him to stay and fight his way into the team.

“He has a lot of quality. If he works hard and tries his best, he could become part of the starting line-up.

“First, I want to say I like Jens as a person, he’s a good lad. He’s young. It’s a big step for him to move from Bodo/Glimt to Milan. He needs time to play his way into the line-up.

“But when he’s given the chance, he always does well. He works a lot and I believe in him.

“He has a great talent. I’m very happy to play with him.”

The Turkey international said he ‘wasn’t surprised’ by how Hauge adapted to the life at San Siro.

“I wasn’t surprised. For the player, it’s easier to play on a better team. There are more characters and higher quality. It made it easier for him,” Calhanoglu said.

“He needs to work and believe in himself. It’s not easy to get into the starting line-up, we have a lot of quality players. He needs to take his time.

“He must work more with the tactical approach and what the coach demands from him, but his time will come.”
