Hakan Calhanoglu admitted he ‘feels’ like he’s the strongest midfielder in Europe and called the upcoming friendly with Italy a ‘good test’ for Turkey.

The 30-year-old midfielder played a leading role in Inter’s charge to their 20th Scudetto this term, scoring 13 goals and providing three assists across 32 Serie A matches, having reinvented himself in a deeper role under Simone Inzaghi.

Italy are gearing up for their first friendly of the post-season, facing Turkey this evening before their clash with Bosnia on June 9th. Luciano Spalletti’s side will then travel to Germany for the European Championship, where they’ll face Albania on the 15th, Spain on the 20th and Croatia on the 24th.

Calhanoglu confidence

Speaking to Rai Sport via Calciomercato.com, Calhanoglu was first asked if Turkey could put together a strong campaign at the European Championship under Vincenzo Montella.

“I hope so and I’m happy to continue playing, because we are working very well, and I hope we can do a great thing for our country. We also need the strength of our fans.”

He was asked if he truly feels like the strongest midfielder in Europe, as suggested by Montella.

“As I have already said many times, I feel this way. I know well that there are many champions, but I am improving and growing.”

Finally, Calhanoglu weighed in on Italy’s chances at the European Championship.

“They’re strong and won the last edition. There are five or six of my teammates there, as Spalletti rightly said, it’s an advantage because they always play together. There are other strong players too. However, it’ll be a good test for us.”
