Italy impressed at the European Under-21 Championship this month, reaching the Final where they lost 4-2 to holders Spain.

On Friday defender Donati officially completed his transfer from Inter to Bayer Leverkusen for approximately €3m.

“I am truly happy the negotiations were concluded,” said the 23-year-old. “Bayer are a top level club in Germany and they also have a good reputation in Italy.

“I can’t wait to test out my qualities in the Bundesliga and make my Champions League debut. Naturally, this is a very special challenge for me. I’ll give my all to help Bayer achieve their targets.”

Donati is not the only Italy Under-21 international likely to be heading for Germany, as his Inter youth academy teammate Caldirola has been linked with Werder Bremen.

SportMediaset claim the Bundesliga side prepared an offer for the 22-year-old, who was captain of the Azzurrini.

He spent last season in Serie B with Cesena, notching up 36 appearances, and this week Inter bought out Cesena’s 50 per cent of the player to own him outright.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Werder Bremen want to take Caldirola on loan with option to buy.
