In addition to Gonzalo Higuain’s transfer, Milan and Juventus have also agreed to exchange Mattia Caldara and Leonardo Bonucci.

Defender Caldara is poised to move to San Siro without having played a competitive match for the Bianconeri, while Diavolo captain Bonucci will rejoin the Serie A champions just one year after leaving.

Gazzetta dello Sport understands the deal will be a straight swap, with both players valued at €40m and no money involved.

Gazzetta dello Sport understands the deal will be a straight swap, with both players valued at €40m and no money involved.

The agreement follows a period of intense negotiations between the clubs, with Chelsea also heavily interested in both Higuain and Caldara, as well as Juve’s Daniele Rugani.

However, it appears Maurizio Sarri’s team will have to turn their attentions to other targets, with the Higuain-Caldara-Bonucci saga set to officially end in the coming days.

Juve have been keen to offload Argentine Higuain following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo – and this is said to have had a big influence on the Caldara-Bonucci exchange.

Milan are said to have made it clear that they would pull out of a €54m deal for the forward if they were unable to sign Caldara in return.

And it appears the Bianconeri have agreed to do business, despite their reluctance to lose promising centre-back Caldara.

Negotiations were also held up by the fact both clubs believed their respective defender to be of greater value.

However, a straight swap has now been agreed as the best possible solution, with Rossoneri captain Bonucci set for a dramatic reunion with Max Allegri after his acrimonious departure a year ago.
