Italian football is in mourning after the death of former Milan, Lazio, Inter and Perugia coach Ilario Castagner.

The tactician was 82 years old and had been retired since leaving Perugia for the third time in February 1999.

His first and last jobs were at Perugia, where he made an indelible mark on the city and the club.

There were also experiences at Lazio from 1980-82, Milan in 1982-84 and Inter in 1984-85.

Castagner will forever be remembered for the Perugia dei Miracoli, the team that won the Serie B title and a year later managed to shock everyone by finishing second in Serie A behind Milan.

They were unbeaten in that 1978-79 campaign, registering 11 victories and 19 draws, an achievement only matched by Milan in 1991-92 and Juventus in 2011-12.

Castagner then took Milan back to Serie A after their relegation and brought Inter to the UEFA Cup semi-final in 1984, winning the Mitropa Cup on the bench of Ascoli in 1986.

He returned to his beloved Perugia in 1993 with the club in Serie C1 and again saw them climb back into the top flight, before resigning and deciding to retire in February 1999 following a row with President Luciano Gaucci.
