Calcio braced for problems as Growth Decree scrapped

There are reports an extension to the Growth Decree planned to last until February has been scrapped, so Italian clubs will not receive fiscal advantages on January signings.

The Growth Decree put in place by the Italian Government had effectively been an incentive to bring foreign talent into the country, giving their employers up to 50 per cent discounts on the taxes payable for their wages.

This allowed clubs to sign players who otherwise would’ve been priced out of their financial capabilities.

For months there have been discussions on the use of the Growth Decree, with the current Government eager to scrap it entirely.

There were hopes it would be extended until February, therefore giving clubs these financial incentives for the January transfer window.

However, according to news agency ANSA, that plan has been dropped and it will expire on December 31.

Many clubs see the removal of the Growth Decree as a devastating blow to their potential transfer strategy, while others feel the incentives only encourage more investment in overseas players, who are cheaper than signing Italian talent.
