Calabria revealed he always wanted to play for Milan and chose the Diavolo over Brescia and Atalanta when he was younger.

“I grew up at Milan, so my dream was to get there,” Calabria told Cronache di Spogliatoio. “It was my goal, it was something beautiful.

“It was my dream since I was a child to play for Milan. Brescia and Atalanta arrived before Milan, but I immediately chose the Rossoneri.

“I live between Brescia and Bergamo, so Milan was more complicated, but I was a supporter and that brought me here.”

Calabria has been an important player in the rebirth of the Diavolo and has helped the club fight for a place in the Champions League this season.

But the full-back admitted the ‘last few years have been difficult’ at Milanello.

“We have grown together in recent years,” he said. “It has been a long and difficult journey. The last few years have been difficult for everyone.

“There have been several owners, for us players it has not been easy. To be great again, you need a solid club.”

Calabria praised technical director Paolo Maldini and said the former left-back helped the Rossoneri succeed.

“He’s the captain of the Milan captains,” Calabria continued. “He’s the man who best represents Milan.

“He’s not one of many words, but he always spurs you on and his presence alone makes you believe in the project.

“His presence helped the rebirth of Milan."
