Cairo: ‘Serie A should break away’

Torino President Urbano Cairo says Serie A should consider following the example of the Premier League, by breaking away from the FIGC.

Yesterday the Federation failed to elect a new President, while there has been no head of the Lega Serie A since last April.

In 1992, top flight English clubs resigned from the Football League to form their own breakaway Premier League, meaning they have commercial independence from The Football Association and the Football League.

“Calcio has stopped, but there’s an opportunity to restart,” Cairo said in an interview with La Stampa.

“There’s a chance to rethink so many aspects of our movement, we need to think about which model we want to go with.

“We’re expecting a major change in the governance of the Lega Serie A, but we need to review our relationship with the FIGC at the same time.

“I’m thinking of the English example, the Premier League broke away from the Federation. It’s a long journey but no an impossible one, and above all one we should start studying attentively.”
