The restructuring of the Blucerchiati under Walter Zenga's supervision saw the surprise move of Cagni's dismissal.

Speaking to Il Secolo XIX, the former assistant manager said the move was entirely unexpected.

“It was a shock, completely out of the blue,” he said.

“I went to Bogliasco like any other day for the training sessions, but Coach Zenga and director [Carlo] Osti told me about my sacking.

“There was no argument or anything, just this communication. I'm surprised and displeased, but I think I did the job that was assigned to me.

“Maybe I did something wrong, I don't know.

“In any case I wish all the best to the club, and I'm sure they'll have a better season than last year, because this is a quality team.”
