Cagliari President Tommaso Giulini is happy with the ‘aggressive game’ played against Cesena, as he closes the club’s January transfer market for now.
The Rossoblu earned a vital three points in winning 2-1 against Cesena, a current direct rival in the battle against relegation.
Giulini, who picked up the Isolani’s ownership and presidency in the summer of last year, hopes that this will mean a new start for the Sardinian team.
“The game was prepared in the right way,” said Giulini in an interview on Radiolina’s A Voi La Linea.
“I saw a very aggressive game right from the opening, it's a shame that we had to suffer in the final phase.
“But it was important to break the taboo and win at the Sant'Elia.
“I thought things would have been easier. The month of December in particular was very tough for us. Let's hope that period was closed with the [5-0] defeat against Palermo. A new season starts now.”
Cagliari's performances have been marred by the injuries of strikers Marco Sau and Victor Ibarbo and the disappointing season of Daniele Conti, but Giulini has faith in all of them.
“[Sau and Ibarbo] are extremely important players who will return with us soon. Daniele played an extraordinary game against Milan.
“But I don't think we should talk about the individuals. Daniele is but one among many who proved that they are great players.
“We think our current squad is adequate. Of course we're short of some important players upfront, but if Sau and Ibarbo return, we can't think of accumulating striker upon striker. The return of those two would make for our best new signings.”
The club have been linked with a number of targets in attack, including Dani Osvaldo and Gonzalo Bergessio.
“I think that the squad is competitive enough to save itself in Serie A. Now we will see Sau and Cop against Parma on Wednesday and then make our assessments.”
Cagliari will be playing against the Ducali in the Last 16 in the Coppa Italia on Wednesday, and for the President of the Rossoblu this represents a significant chance.
“It's an important match, because we have the opportunity of going up against Juventus in the next round. Let's hope we make it through.
“We'll see what a new striker like [Duje] Cop can do, after he scored an avalanche of goals in his country. And let's hope to see Marco Sau, for a few minutes or more than that.
“We chose to invest on players who are 24, 25, like [Josef] Husbauer and Cop. They can turn out to be great signings. [Matteo] Mancosu was a different story, he is 30, he could have done some good things in Serie A.
“But when you aim for a player of that age, it's wiser to think of getting him on a free transfer, and this was not an option.
“We have made investments in two players who are 24 and 25, which was a far-sighted corporate decision.
“We'll plan our next mercato moves starting from Thursday. For the moment, the ins and outs of the market can be considered closed.
“[On loan from Verona, Alejandro] Gonzalez will do very well with Cagliari. He will keep up the tradition of the Uruguayans in the Rossoblu shirt.”
Giulini also released some statements about the possibility of a new stadium, a project that he believes to be realistic if properly planned.
“At the Sant'Elia we have a three-year concession. Obviously we'd love to play in a new stadium within three or four years.
“I hope I can glimpse a chance in a few months’ time, but it has to be planned carefully. In any case it's one of our priorities.”
Finally, the President reiterated his ambition to bring back Cagliari among Serie A's top teams by the centennial in 2020.
“It's an ambition that should belong to every President in Serie A. Of course, these first few months have been harder than expected. But the ambition hasn't changed.”
