Cagliari play down ultras attack

The Sardinians worked hard to play down the incident, which has been reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport among many others as a physical attack on several squad members, including Nicola Murru.

“There was an encounter between the team and around 20 supporters belonging to a stadium group,” Cagliari VP Filucchi told Sky Sport Italia.

“They wanted a confrontation to explain their reasons and the club has always been open to dialogue with all of the fans.

“There was a tough and lively confrontation which does not entirely reconcile with the President’s openness towards dialogue.

“It happened last night at around 19.30, before the team meeting. After that the players went into their rooms and this morning the training session will go ahead as normal.

“Nothing irreparable happened, but obviously it is outside the norm. They accused the players of not giving their all, but the lads have so far given everything for the shirt. We do not see behaviour that is incompatible with our current sporting situation.

“The players are thoroughly concentrated on the next game and we’ll play each match with the utmost effort.

“We have an ambitious long-term project that we want to push forward thanks also to healthy and positive support from our fans.

“Nothing will shake us from that and nobody can obstruct our desire to take Cagliari to a great level.”
