Cagliari have announced a series of initiatives to remember club legend Gigi Riva during their upcoming match against Torino.

The Scudetto winner wore the Cagliari jersey from 1963 until his retirement in 1978, helping them win their one and only Serie A title.

His Number 11 jersey had already been retired in his honour in February 2005 and there are plans in progress to name a new stadium after Riva, who died on Monday at the age of 79.

The Lega Serie A has announced there will be a minute’s silence before every match this weekend for the man who was Italy’s all-time top scorer with 35 goals in just 42 caps.

When Cagliari host Torino on Friday at the Unipol Domus stadium, there will be a series of other initiatives to remember ‘Rombo di Tuono,’ including video of his greatest moments on the big screen.

As the team line-up is read out, an additional player will be Gigi Riva, 11.

During the warm-up, the squad will wear a jersey inspired by the Scudetto-winning shirt in 1970.

In the match itself, Cagliari will wear a special version of the 2023-24 white kit, with the sponsors removed to make way for the number 11 on the chest.

The entire Cagliari team will wear black armbands and there will be a special choreography in the stands.
