Cagliari President Tommaso Giulini confirmed Walter Mazzarri’s position in Sardinia and stressed ‘the coach is one of the few certainties to hold on to’ after another defeat in Serie A.

The difficult moment continues for the Rossoblu, who were beaten 2-0 by Bologna at the Renato Dall’Ara on Monday.

Lorenzo De Silvestri scored the opening goal and seemed set to become the match winner, before Marko Arnautovic added the nail in the coffin during stoppages.

The patron spoke to Sky Sport Italia after the defeat in Bologna, leaving Cagliari at the bottom of the table with only six points from 11 games.

“The thing that hurts the most is the last place in the table,” Giulini told Sky Sport Italia. “Commenting on the game is of little use.

“The situation is unacceptable. We need to be hungrier during the week and during the games. Stand behind our coach.

“All the situations are going wrong, but we have to think about ourselves and pick up as many points as possible to get out of this situation.”

Despite a squad full of quality players, the main target is now to reach safety in Serie A.

“We knew that our primary objective was safety,” he said. “Last year, we miraculously saved ourselves. We must take not of the situation with a lot of humility.

“It takes work and personality to get out of this situation.”

Giulini admitted he could order his players into a retreat to work ahead of the next match against Atalanta.

“A few days in a retreat to prepare for the match against Atalanta would be useful, we haven’t done it yet,” he said.

“We will make the decision with the coach. The team in general is more compact and the coach is one of the few certainties we hold on to.

“We changed coach after three days because we noticed some problems. Mazzarri has not succeeded yet, but we have seen what the coach wants from the team at times.

“The refereeing decisions were not favourable to us, we hope the trend will change quickly.”
