Cagliari celebrate 50th Scudetto anniversary

On April 12, 1970, Cagliari secured their only Scudetto with a 2-0 win against Bari at the Amsicora Stadium, thanks to goals by Gigi Riva and Bobo Gori.

A boiling Amsicora was not left disappointed as their Rossoblu heroes secured the Scudetto with two match days to go in Serie A 1969-70 and the win, sealed by Gori and talisman Riva, remains the solitary triumph in Casteddu’s history.

Today, the city celebrates the 50th anniversary since the unforgettable evening and President Tommaso Guilini recalls the ‘fairy tale’ in an interview with Sky Sport Italia.

“It was a beautiful day for all of us, I remember it as the most beautiful fairy tale that my dad used to tell me as a child, even if I didn’t understand much about the social dynamics at the time,” he told Sky Sport Italia. “In these days, those emotions return.

“That Cagliari were a group of friends; you can still see the chemistry between them.”

The former Italy international and European Champions from 1968, Riva, was the star of the show and was named Honorary President of Cagliari in December 2019.

But the Sardinians will not be able to celebrate this rare and cultural defining moment for its people, as the coronavirus pandemic is keeping people at home, behind closed doors.

In this particular situation, Cagliari have asked their fans to help create a special moment and celebrate all together by painting balconies all over the world in red and blue in remembrance of the heroes of 1969-70.

As we are waiting for football to resume and to put this difficult moment behind us, Cagliari Calcio have encouraged fans to upload photos of their celebration with the hashtag #5cudett0 and tag the Cagliari Calcio’s official accounts to help create a gallery that will add to the memories of a special anniversary.

“Let’s celebrate the #5cudett0 together,” they wrote on Twitter and added the steps to follow:

1. Colour your balcony in red and blue

2. Take a photo or create a video

3. Share the result in a tweet

4. Let your friends and family know

“Don’t forget to use the hashtag #5cudett0 and to tag @cagliaricalcio”
