Claudio Ranieri’s Cagliari are appealing to replay a Serie B match they lost to Modena after one of their players failed to receive a red card for two bookings.

The chaotic Week 23 encounter ended 2-0 to hosts Modena on Friday February 3, but the result has been suspended pending an investigation.

This is because at the 88th minute, Gabriele Zappa was shown his second yellow card of the match, but referee Daniele Perenzoni did not realise that there had already been one booking, so didn’t sent him off.

It would’ve left Cagliari down to nine men, seeing as Marko Rog had already been dismissed in the first half.

Cagliari lost the game and it was their player who should’ve been sent off, but still they are the ones who have lodged an appeal to have it replayed.

Considering the error was so late in a match that was won by a two-goal margin, it remains to be seen if the authorities will opt to replay or simply accept the result.
