Udinese could only leave Sardinia with a single point after they were held to a goalless draw by a hard-working Cagliari side.

Andrea Sottil’s squad have struggled to impose themselves in the early stages of the new season, being winless after their first three outings. The hope was that they could finally secure their first victory in Sardinia this afternoon, but Claudio Ranieri and his players had other ideas.

Cagliari have also started the campaign slowly, picking up just a point in their first three games, but the team are starting to prove themselves as no pushovers following the September international break.

The Rossoblu started the match on the front foot and started to probe the Bianconeri defence in the first 20 minutes, almost taking the lead through an Alessandro Deiola header, which sailed just left of the Friulian net.

Udinese then had a brief spell of momentum but were equally unconvincing in front of goal, letting Cagliari off the hook. The two sides jostled for control in the remainder of the first half, but neither could find the right combination.

Deiola had another close chance in the early stages of the second half but again his header bounced wide, keeping things level at the Unipol Domus. The Friulian side then forayed forward again but Jaka Bijol’s header was also off-target in the 55th minute.

Neither side looked particularly threatening in the final 30 minutes of the match and neither could break the deadlock, forcing them both to share a point apiece after a tiring clash in the Sardinia capital.
