Former full back Cafu is set to sue Roma and Qatar Airways for almost €12m in damages over a violation of image rights, reports detail.
A report from Il Messaggero via Calcio e Finanza details how the Brazilian is ready to take the club and the airline to court for €11.8m in compensation after his image rights were unfairly violated by the two companies.
The case dates back to 2019, when Cafu gave a green light to take part in Roma’s testimonial as part of a new sponsorship with Qatar Airways. He flew to Warsaw and shot a safety video, which was quickly broadcast on television.
After this, things fell quiet. The two-time World Cup winner asked his representative Vincenzo Aliotta to find a payment agreement with Roma, which moved slowly and was delayed multiple times.
In August 2020, James Pallotta sold Roma to the Friedkin family without finding an agreement with Cafu. The former full back continued to wait, not wanting to take legal action due to his love of the club.
After a long wait, Cafu has now decided to sue Roma and Qatar Airways, wanting around €11.8m in damages, based off the 46-month period of broadcast and his usual sponsorship deals.
A date for the final attempt at conciliation has been set for November 17, and if no agreement is reached, the former player will take the two to court.
