Sergio Busquets said going out of the Champions League to Roma despite a 4-1 first leg result was “the worst blow of my Barcelona career.”

The midfielder had been expected to rest at the Stadio Olimpico in this quarter-final clash, but played on through pain and lost 3-0.

“It’s my most negative experience. We went out in a similar way last season,” Busquets told BeIN Sport.

The midfielder had been expected to rest at the Stadio Olimpico in this quarter-final clash, but played on through pain and lost 3-0.

“It’s my most negative experience. We went out in a similar way last season,” Busquets told BeIN Sport.

“We’re out of the Champions League, which we didn’t want after a good result in the first leg… but that’s football.

“They took us to their place and created chances against us. We didn’t position ourselves well, that’s why they won and we didn’t.

“They were the better team and for them, it was almost a case of all or nothing. The worst blow of my Barca career? Probably, yes. We came into the game from a very good run of form, but unfortunately this has cut all our good work.”

Eusebio Di Francesco surprised everyone with a 3-4-1-2 formation, whereas Ernesto Valverde was criticised for being too conservative.

“Our approach is to do with everyone on the pitch. We have to go for all the trophies we have left. It wouldn’t be a bad season if we won them, but it’s been tarnished by what happened here in Rome.”
